چکیده

Colloidal suspensions of charged polystyrene microspheres can self-organize into colloidal crystals, providing a three-dimensional periodic dielectric medium suitable for the study of photonic band structure effects in the infrared, near-infrared, and visible wavelength regimes. Light propagation along any particular direction in such a system displays bands of frequencies for which the propagation of light is strongly inhibited. Substitutional doping of these colloidal crystals with scatterers of slightly different size or different dielectric strength introduces optical disorder into these crystals which is manifested by the appearance of impurity modes within the optical stop bands. These defect modes can be tuned by appropriate selection of the defect volume and the dielectric constants of the dopants. Widening of optical stop bands with increasing impurity peak heights was observed in the doped crystals. @S0163-1829~96!02644-6#

A New Method for Calculating Propagation Modes of a One Dimensional Photonic Crystal (RESEARCH NOTE)

Photonic band-gap (PBG) crystals offer new dimensions of freedom in controlling propagation of electromagnetic waves. The existence of stop-bands in the transmission characteristic of these crystals makes them a suitable element for the realization of many useful microwave and optical subsystems. In this paper, we calculate the propagation constant of a one-dimensional (1-D) photonic crystal by...

Tunable photonic crystals with partial bandgaps from blue phase colloidal crystals and dielectric-doped blue phases.

Blue phase colloidal crystals and dielectric nanoparticle/polymer doped blue phases are demonstrated to combine multiple components with different symmetries in one photonic material, creating a photonic crystal with variable and micro-controllable photonic band structure. In this composite photonic material, one contribution to the band structure is determined by the 3D periodic birefringent o...

IMPURITY [NDUCED FAR INFRARED ABSORPTION OF CsI CRYSTALS L.GENZEL, W. PRETTL and E.SIEP

In perfect alkali halide crystals only the transverse optic phonons of zero wave vector absorb far infrared radiation in first order. The introduction of impurities in the lattice removes the translational invariance and almost all phonons become optically active. In addition to the absorption at the reststrahlen frequency, impurity induced absorption appears in the phonon band region and somet...

Lu3+/Yb3+ and Lu3+/Er3+ Co-doped Antimony Selenide Nanomaterials: Synthesis, Characterization, Electrical, Thermoelectrical and Optical Properties

Lu3+/Yb3+ and Lu3+/Er3+ Co-doped Sb2Se3 nanomaterials were synthesized by a Co-reduction method in hydrothermal condition. Powder XRD patterns indicate that the LnxLn′xSb2-2xSe3 Ln: Lu3+/Yb3+ and Lu3+/Er3+ crystals (x= 0.00-0.04) are isostructural with Sb2Se3. The cell parameters were increased for compounds upon increasing the dopant content (x). SEM and TEM images show that Co-doping of Lu3+/...
